RIPARIAN VEGETATION
It has been estimated that 90% of riparian habitat in Arizona has been lost or impacted to some extent. In order to mitigate potential losses to riparian habitat at Roosevelt Lake, Reclamation constructed the Tonto Creek Riparian Unit on Tonto Creek upstream of Roosevelt lake. A monitoring study was also implemented to monitor response of the vegetation to managed grazing in the 15 mile long unit.
Cook's Lake on the lower San Pedro River is a unique, and biologically important wooded wetland. Reclamation
purchased this 90 acre site to mitigate for the potential loss of 20 acres of wetland downstream of New Waddell Dam.
