San Joaquin Scour Hole Project

Overview

A scour hole (deep area) has been identified in a location where unusually high predation of juvenile salmonids may occur. It is located west of Lathrop and Manteca on the San Joaquin River just north of the junction with the Old River. Predatory fish use the depth of the scour hole to hide and ambush the juvenile salmonids, including endangered steel head smolts.

Status

As of October 2024, Reclamation’s Bay-Delta Office is conducting a feasibility study to gather detailed information and evaluate practical solutions. A stakeholder meeting is expected to follow once the study results are available.
