Photogrammetric Tools for Condition Assessment of Reclamation Structures

Project ID: 9384
Principal Investigator: Matthew Klein
Research Topic: Condition Assessment
Funded Fiscal Years: 2016
Keywords: None

Research Question

How can the latest photogrammetric techniques and technologies be used to improve condition assessments of
Reclamation structures?

Need and Benefit

Results from this research would greatly enhance Reclamation's knowledge and application of photogrammetry's
unique process to the agency's diverse and specialized infrastructure. It would set Reclamation apart as an
authority on 3D modeling and analysis. In addition, exploration will lead to additional challenges and
opportunities.
Applying this research to Reclamation's 3D modeling and condition assessment capability will enhance the
quality of the condition assessment and improve the ability of Reclamation to properly diagnose and evaluate the
condition of its structures and finally to prescribe the proper maintenance and repair procedures to optimize and
prolong Reclamation's aging structures.

Photogrammetric Tools for Condition Assessment of Reclamation Structures (final, PDF, 2.6MB)
By Matthew Klein
Publication completed on September 30, 2016

This report summarizes a continuation of research begun in 2015 to outline advanced photogrammetric techniques for evaluation and implementation in Reclamation's 3D condition assessment program. The tools investigated in this report include the use of spherical cameras for photogrammetric data collection in interior locations and the use of virtual reality as an intuitive method to view, navigate and interact with photogrammetric 3D models.
