Medicine Creek Dam and Reservoir are located in the high plains area of southwestern Nebraska, where the geologic structure is rather simple. In general, the sediments are nearly horizontal and there has been little faulting. Over most of the area Pliestocene aeolian deposits cover the older sediments. The bedrock formations exposed in this area are of Tertiary and Upper Cretaceous age, depending on the amount of erosion. No igneous rocks are found near the surface in this area.
Medicine Creek Dam is on Medicine Creek 2 miles west and 7 miles north of Cambridge, Nebraska. This earthfill embankment dam has a structural height of 165 feet, and an uncontrolled concrete spillway in the left abutment. The outlet works through the dam consists of a concrete conduit and 44-inch-diameter steel pipe controlled by a high-pressure gate. Harry Strunk Lake is formed by the dam.
