Railroad History
The Boise & Arrowrock Railroad was the first government owned standard gauge common carrier railroad. Built in 1911, the 17 mile long railroad connected the construction camp with Barber Junction just northeast of Boise. It operated daily, Monday through Saturday for construction purposes, except Sunday.
The railroad had three steam locomotives, two passenger cars, two boxcars, one caboose, 14 flatcars and 26 gondola cars. The train transported 13,966,264 tons of freight for the dam and 60,314 tons of non United States Reclamation Service freight.
Special excursion train for the public to view the dam left Boise every Sunday at 3 p.m. Over 89,000 people traveled on the train to see the world’s tallest dam under construction.
