Bureau of Reclamation Commissioner John Keys announced the award of a $2 million construction contract for repairs and improvements to hydroelectric generators at the Chandler Power Plant situated on the Chandler Power Canal near Prosser, Washington.

Gracon Corporation, of Loveland, Colorado, was awarded the contract on January 31. The contractor will overhaul hydraulic turbine units 1 and 2, as well as conduct a wear ring replacement on the units.

"The improvements at the Chandler Power Plant will ensure the continued safe and efficient operation of a hydroelectric facility that provides a reliable source of electricity for the operation of pumps that deliver much needed irrigation water," said Commissioner Keys.

About 750 cubic feet per second of water is withdrawn from the Yakima River at Prosser Dam and conveyed over 10 miles through a canal to the Chandler Pumping Plant, where 56 percent of that water is used to provide the energy necessary to lift the water 102 vertical feet to the Kennewick Irrigation District's main canal. Water used to power the pumps is then returned to the Yakima River.

The powerplant was constructed in 1956 as part of Reclamation's Yakima Project. Hydroelectric energy generated at the Chandler Pumping Plant is distributed through the electric grid by the Bonneville Power Administration.
