The Bureau of Reclamation will make an official presentation of its Water 2025 Western States Challenge Grant award to the Idaho Water Resources Board on January 25 during the Idaho Water Users Association convention in Boise, Idaho.

Commissioner John Keys will present IWRB with the Water 2025 Western States Challenge Grant in the amount of $250,000 for the development of a pilot aquifer recharge project to store surface water from the Upper Snake River Basin in the Eastern Snake Plain Aquifer for later use.

"Effective water management is an issue that Idaho takes very seriously and this challenge grant will help set the course for long range water resource planning," said Commissioner Keys.

The total cost of the project is $519,126 with a Water 2025 contribution of $250,000. The recharge project could receive an estimated 10,000 acre feet of water annually. Idaho was one of six states receiving cost share funds in 2005.

The Water 2025 Challenge Grant Program funds activities that will make more efficient use of existing water supplies through water conservation, efficiency and water marketing projects. More information about the Water 2025 Program can be found at http://www.doi.gov/water2025/.
