The Bureau of Reclamation's Provo Area Office is in final preparation for an open house on Friday, June 6, between 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. The purpose of the Open House is to help commemorate the agency's centennial. The centennial theme, "A Century of Water for the West," has been the centerpiece of Reclamation celebration activities across the country since the start of the centennial year on June 17, 2002. The general public is invited.

The agency, established in 1902, with the help of then President Theodore Roosevelt, originated within the U.S. Geological Survey. In 1907, the agency obtained "Bureau" status, and in 1923, officially became the Bureau of Reclamation. Today, Reclamation is the largest water resources management agency in the West, administering 348 reservoirs and delivering more than 10 trillion gallons of water to the nation's farms annually. And each year, Reclamation's 58 power plants produce an average of 60 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity each year while more than 82 million people visit Reclamation's 300 recreational areas.

Among activities at the open house will be performances by the 23rd Army Band and Quintet, the judging and selection of art contest winners from local schools, hands-on water activities, various displays from local, state and sister agency presenters, and a barbecue. In addition, one of three specially designed trailers highlighting agency history will be at the event.

The Bureau of Reclamation is located at Exit 266 off Interstate 15. The address is 302 East, 1860 South, and the building is directly across from Novell Headquarters in Provo's East Bay Business Park. Guests are invited to park in Novell's parking lot on the north side of 1860 South. For more information, please contact Don Merrill at (801) 379 1074.
