The Bureau of Reclamation has released a draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for the proposed construction of the Reclamation District 108 (RD108) Combined Pumping Plant and Fish Screen Project (Project). The purpose of the Project is to eliminate significant impacts to fish in the Sacramento River resulting from losses at three unscreened RD108 diversions while continuing to provide a reliable water supply to the district.

The proposed Project is in support of the Anadromous Fish Screen Program (Program) established to fulfill the Department of the Interiors responsibilities under the Central Valley Project Improvement Act. Reclamation and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are the lead agencies for implementing the Program. One of Reclamations major administrative duties for the Program is serving as the Federal lead agency for compliance with the Endangered Species Act, National Environmental Policy Act, and other environmental laws.

The draft EA was prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969. The draft EA describes the potential environmental impacts associated with the proposed alternatives.

The document is available for a 30-day comment period that ends January 3, 2006. A copy of the document is available online at www.usbr.gov/mp/nepa/; click on the Regional Office link.
