For Release: November 14, 2005

Mark your calendars for two upcoming events at the New Melones Lake Visitor Center.

The first event, featuring the photography of Jeff Nixon, will begin its 8-week show Saturday, November 19, 2005, continuing through Saturday, January 14, 2006.  A nostalgic tribute to the Stanislaus River, the exhibit features a series of large format, black and white photographs.  Taken 25 years ago before New Melones Reservoir existed, the photographs serve to preserve the beauty and special qualities of the river canyon from that time period.  It is an opportunity to enjoy the canyon views and to see the river as it was, as well as appreciate the art and skill of Mr. Nixons photography.  A reception in Mr. Nixons honor will take place Saturday, November 26, from 1 - 3 p.m. at the New Melones Lake Visitor Center.

A second event is an Outdoor Italian Bread Baking Program Sunday, November 20, 2005, at 1 p.m.  The art of baking in a stone oven was a necessary skill perfected by early Italian gold miners.  Learn how and enjoy the tasty results at a cooking demonstration and historysharing.  The outdoor stone oven, originally constructed by immigrant Italian gold miners in the Angels Creek area between 1860 and 1880, has been reconstructed at the Visitor Center.

The New Melones Lake Visitor Center is located ¼ mile south of the Highway 49 Stevenot Bridge that spans New Melones Lake, 8 miles north of Sonora, or 7 miles south of Angels Camp.  It is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday, and is closed Monday and Tuesday.

For more information, please call the Visitor Center 209-536-9543 or Park Administration at 209-536-9094.
