For Release: October 31, 2005

Two Bureau of Reclamation rangers from the New Melones Lake Resource Area will be speaking at the Sandhill Crane Festival in Lodi, November 5 and 6, 2005.

On Saturday, November 5, from 2 - 2:50 p.m., Interpretive Ranger Leanne Bryan will present a Power Point talk on "What Birds Wish You Knew" at Thomas Theater. With recent threats such as West Nile virus, habitat fragmentation, and pesticide overuse, local birds are facing increasing threats. Ranger Bryan will focus on practical, everyday ways you can help them.

On Sunday, November 6, from 2 - 2:50 p.m., Park Ranger Therese Carll will speak on "Buzzards Are Beautiful" at Crete Hall. Ranger Carll will share many interesting facts on these misunderstood birds. Turkey Vultures are nature's original recyclers.

Ranger Bryan has worked at New Melones Lake for almost 7 ½ years as an interpretive ranger leading guided ranger walks, and coordinating activities for a year-round interpretive program both in the campgrounds and at the New Melones Visitor Center. She's an avid birder in her spare time. Ranger Carll has worked at New Melones for more than 3 years as a patrol ranger.
