The Bureau of Reclamation will have representation at a special award ceremony on November 2 to announce a Water 2025 Challenge Grant for the Lewiston Orchards Irrigation District in Lewiston, Idaho.

Federal, state and local officials will join the award recipients and honored guests at 2:00 p.m. at Hereth Park, 1534 Powers Avenue.

The $181,218 Water 2025 Challenge Grant will help the irrigation district to replace about 2,650 feet of the Sweetwater Canal with an enclosed piping system. The new pipe will help reduce seepage, evaporation losses, reduce the risk of canal failure, and improve water delivery. Total cost for the project is about $362,436.

"This project is an example of how we can make more efficient use of existing water supplies through cooperative partnerships," said Bill McDonald, Reclamation Regional Director. "The Lewiston Orchards Irrigation District is facing the needs of the future by focusing on conservation today."

The Water 2025 Challenge Grant Program funds activities that will make more efficient use of existing water supplies through water conservation, efficiency and water marketing projects. More information about the Water 2025 Program can be found at http://www.doi.gov/water2025/.
