For Release: February 02, 2004

The Bureau of Reclamation is seeking proposals and identification of issues and concerns for management of 222 acres, called the Oxbow property, adjacent to the Umatilla River near Hermiston, Oregon. This information will guide the development of an environmental assessment which will analyze future use, development, and management of the property. Comments should be provided to Reclamation by March 3.

The 1988 Umatilla Basin Project Act (102 Stat. 2791, Public Law 100-557) provided Reclamation with the authority to purchase land to benefit fisheries resources. In addition, the Oxbow property may be able to accommodate recreational, research, or educational activities. The 222 acres were acquired in separate transactions in 2000.

Several proposals for activities or features at the Oxbow property have already been identified. Reclamation is requesting specific information about these proposals. However, before any decisions are made about the management of the Oxbow site, Reclamation will complete an environmental assessment under the National Environmental Policy Act.

To be placed on a mailing list, provide information, or identify possible social and environmental impacts or concerns, please contact Tanya Sommer, Bureau of Reclamation, Lower Columbia Area Office, 825 NE Multnomah Street, Suite 1110, Portland OR 97232, or call (503) 872-2846. Comments are requested by March 3.
