Media Contact: Jeffrey McCracken, 916-978-5100, jmccracken@mp.usbr.gov

For Release: July 15, 2003

Starting on Friday, July 18, 2003, Reclamation will once again offer free public tours of Shasta Dam. Tours will be offered daily at 9 and 11 a.m., and at 1 and 3 p.m.

Guests should park at the Visitor Center and are asked to leave all belongings in their vehicles. No cameras or bags of any kind will be allowed on the tour. Guided tours will start at the second elevator tower on the dam. The tour will take visitors down in the elevator, out to the spillway area, and will include a view inside the power plant.

Reclamation’s priorities are to provide for the safety of the visitors, employees, and our facilities. Considerable security modifications and precautions have been put into place since September 11, 2001 to ensure this goal is met, while still offering the public an opportunity to tour the dam.

Pedestrian traffic is allowed on the dam from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. People wanting to drive vehicles across the dam are still required to obtain an access permit from the Shasta Dam Security Office or online at: www.usbr.gov/mp/ncao/index.html

For more information, contact the Shasta Dam Visitor Center at 530-275-4463.
