Prosser Creek Dam Temporary Road Closure

Media Contact: Jeffrey S. McCracken, 916-978-5100, jmccracken@mp.usbr.gov

For Release: September 12, 2005

Prosser Creek Dam Road will be closed for construction activities for 2 months, tentatively scheduled from September 19 to the end of November 2005. The Bureau of Reclamation owns and operates Prosser Creek Dam and is overseeing the construction contract. The purpose of the construction is to modify the existing dam to increase water storage capacity in the reservoir to increase flood protection to downstream communities.

The dam, located on Prosser Creek approximately 4 miles northeast of Truckee, California, stores water in Prosser Creek Reservoir which allows for regulation of runoff from the Truckee River system. The dam provides flood protection to the cities of Reno and Sparks, Nevada. Water is also provided for irrigation, fisheries, and municipal and industrial use.

The dam modification involves construction of a 3-foot-high concrete wall on the upstream side of the dam road. Other features of the construction will involve removal of the existing guardrail, re-grading and repaving of the road on top of the dam, and installation of rip-rap on the upstream side of the dam.

During the 2 month road closure period, detours through Hobart Mills or over Boca Dam are suggested. Road signs will be posted to provide information on the status of Prosser Creek Dam Road, or call toll-free 1-800-742-9474 to obtain the current status.
