For Release: July 21, 2005

Bureau of Reclamation Great Plains Regional Director Mike Ryan announced a $740,386 contract was awarded July 19 to demolish Reclamation's existing office building in McCook, Neb. The contractor, Midwest Construction Services of Omaha, will also do site grading and final grading and build a 26,000-square-foot parking lot. The existing building was built more than 70 years ago. Initially, it was a well known dance hall called "The Gayway" prior to being purchased by Reclamation in the 1950's. It was remodeled and expanded and has served hundreds of Reclamation employees since. The aging building had structural and maintenance problems which necessitated its replacement.

Construction of the new office building was started in June 2004 and completed in May 2005 when Reclamation took occupancy. Midwest Construction Services was also the contractor for the construction of the new building.

The contractor will have 120 days to complete the project after the notice to proceed date.
