Statement of Reclamation Area Manager Ken Maxey on Agreement of Texas and New Mexico on Credit Water Relinquishment

Media Contact: Kim Greenwood, (505) 462-3557, kgreenwood@uc.usbr.gov

For Release: April 23, 2003

The Bureau of Reclamation greatly appreciates the state of Texas' willingness to negotiate and accept a credit water relinquishment that lessens the impacts of the current severe drought on water users in New Mexico. This agreement could not have been realized without the leadership of the State of New Mexico and Senator Pete Domenici.

The agreement is the result of a collaborative effort among the State of New Mexico, the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District (MRGCD), the six Middle Rio Grande Pueblos, the Bureau of Reclamation, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Army Corps of Engineers and Bureau of Indian Affairs that took into consideration each party's needs.
