For Release: July 18, 2005

Bureau of Reclamation Great Plains Regional Director Mike Ryan announced an $881,351 contract to Motorola, Inc., for replacement and upgrade of the radio communication system for the Eastern Colorado Area Office, Loveland, Colo. The contract was awarded June 21. Motorola equipment will be used to upgrade the communication system on Reclamation's Colorado-Big Thompson and Fryingpan-Arkansas water diversion and delivery projects which include 21 dams and seven hydroelectric powerplants managed by the area office in Loveland.

Equipment purchased from Motorola includes 800 MHZ, narrow-band, hand-held radios as well as mobile and base units. The upgrade was necessitated by a federal law requiring all existing VHF radio systems to be narrow-banded by 2005. Upgrading enables Reclamation employees to utilize the state-wide public safety communication system, if necessary.
