RECLAMATION PLANS DRAFT REFUGE CRITERIA WORKSHOP

The Bureau of Reclamation has scheduled a public workshop on the draft Criteria for Developing Refuge Water Management Plans (Refuge Criteria). The Refuge Criteria will apply to National Wildlife Refuges, State Wildlife Areas and private wetlands (referred to as Refuges) that hold water supply contracts with Reclamation. The Refuge Criteria outlines the criteria for developing and submitting refuge plans.

The Central Valley Project Improvement Act mandates that the Department of the Interior provides set quantities of water to Refuges. The Department of the Interior Administrative Review Process determined that the Refuges should prepare and implement water management plans. In 2001, Reclamation entered into water service contracts with the Refuges, whereas contract compliance is contingent upon successful Refuge Plan development and implementation.
The workshop is an opportunity for the public to review and comment on the draft Refuge Criteria and will aid the Refuges in understanding the process for developing and submitting their refuge plans. The draft criteria is available online at www.usbr.gov/mp/watershare.
