For Release: May 16, 2003

Bureau of Reclamation drill crews will be conducting a study of the embankment and foundation of Jackson Gulch Dam as part of Reclamation's ongoing Safety of Dams Program. The study will consist of seepage monitoring, geologic mapping, and drilling and sampling of the dam embankment and foundation. Drilling will begin in late May and is expected to continue to late July, 2003. Drilling and installation of instruments within the embankment and foundation will assist in monitoring the performance of the dam.

Jackson Gulch Dam is a rock-faced earthfill structure with a height of 180 feet and a crest length of 1,900 feet, and is located on Jackson Gulch five miles north of Mancos, Colorado. The road crossing the dam will be closed to one lane of traffic while drilling is being performed on the dam crest.
