Draft Environmental Assessment for Bankline Stabilization and River Control Project above Palo Verde Dam Available for Public Review and Comment

The Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) is proposing a bankline stabilization and river control project above the Palo Verde Dam, near Blythe, California, and has issued a draft environmental assessment of the project for public review and comment.

The proposed action is to redirect the current flow pattern of the Colorado River above the Palo Verde Dam to improve the hydraulics of the river to minimize erosion processes. The erosion is causing increased maintenance and will eventually threaten diversion of irrigation water to Palo Verde Irrigation District.

The long-term objectives of the project are to: (1) train flows to the center of the present channel; (2) remove or diminish an existing sandbar and reduce the deposition of sediment in the area; (3) stabilize the bank lines to prevent further erosion; and, (4) protect the earthen embankment of the Palo Verde Dam.

The Draft Environmental Assessment (EA) describing the proposed action and potential effects was prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act and Reclamation guidance. Comments on the Draft EA will be accepted until July 22, 2005. Copies of the EA are available by request to Ms. Dedina Williams at: Bureau of Reclamation, Yuma Area Office, 7301 Calle Agua Salada, Yuma, AZ 85364, Phone: 928-343-8139 or E-mail: dwilliams@lc.usbr.gov. Comments should be sent to Ms. Williams' attention.
