EMMETT, Idaho – The Bureau of Reclamation’s Snake River Area Office will hold its annual C.A.S.T. for Kids fishing event Saturday, Aug. 19, from 9 am to 2 pm. The event will be held at Black Canyon Park located on East Black Canyon Highway northeast of Emmett. Black Canyon Park will be closed to the public from 7 am until 2 pm.

The C.A.S.T. “Catch a Special Thrill,” program provides one-day fishing and boating events designed to accommodate children with a wide range of special needs.

“This year marks the 23rd year C.A.S.T. for Kids has been held at Black Canyon Park,” said Erika Lopez, event coordinator for the Bureau of Reclamation’s Snake River Area Office. “I’m looking forward to seeing all the eager anglers ready to have their fishing and boating adventure.”

Participants range in age from 6 to 18 years old and have a variety of physical or developmental disabilities. Each participant will receive fishing gear, a C.A.S.T. for Kids tee shirt, and hat.

The morning fishing event will be followed by a picnic lunch provided by Gary Lillard with Farmers Insurance and an awards ceremony.

The Gem County Sheriff’s Department and Gem County Fire District One will be on hand to provide emergency services, if necessary.

Otto Otter will be at the event to greet the children. Each child will receive an Otto Otter for Canal Safety coloring book. The book teaches children about the danger of canals and how to be safe around canals, ditches, and other water sources.

Partners are C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation, Bureau of Reclamation, the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, National Interagency Fire Center, members from the Idaho BASS Club, Intermountain Jet Boat Association, Payette River Bassmasters, Western Whitewater Association, Idaho Bass Federation Nation, and other local fishermen who provide fishing boats and professional expertise.
