New Partnership Manages Trails for Public at Lake Pueblo State Park

PUEBLO, Colo. -- The trail system on the south shore of Lake Pueblo State Park is popular with local users and outdoor enthusiasts from across the state. The trail system is on Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) land, which is managed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW). The trail system was informally developed over the past 15 years, with no official plan to coordinate efforts to maintain, repair, and improve the trails. The trail system requires occasional maintenance, which can be sizable work considering it’s more than 40 miles of trail.
Reclamation, CPW, and the Southern Colorado Trail Builders (SCTB) have signed an official Memorandum of Understanding to cooperate and provide on-site maintenance, repair, and improvement work for the trails on the shore of Lake Pueblo State Park. SCTB will now be identifying maintenance issues and submitting official work plans for repairs and updates to Reclamation, performing the work with input and approval from Reclamation.
This agreement is a key step in the development of a Trail Management Plan which will assess sensitive resources in the area, consider trail sustainability, review trail safety, as well as consider the benefit of each trail to all users. Completing the Trail Management Plan is fundamental in the process of fully recognizing the trails as official and in managing them effectively for generations of use and enjoyment.
