BOISE, Idaho – The Bureau of Reclamation awarded a $4,415,850 contract on April 6 to Suulutaaq, Inc., a small business from Suisun City, California, for construction services to modify Hyatt Dam near Ashland, Oregon.

Work under this contract involves excavating portions of the existing dam embankment and foundation, reconstructing dam embankment, furnishing and installing toe drain pipes and concrete inspections wells, constructing a concrete spillway stilling basin and headwall retaining structure, and extending current piezometers. Construction activity will begin in early June 2017 and be completed by the end of November 2017.

“This construction project is necessary to limit the risk of internal erosion in the dam,” said Reclamation’s Acting Commissioner Alan Mikkelsen. “Reclamation has worked diligently on the safety and function of our dams. This work will enable Hyatt Dam to continue to provide irrigation and recreation to the area for many years to come.”

During construction, Reclamation’s recreation site adjacent to Hyatt Dam on the west side will be closed to the public. The Bureau of Land Management’s recreation sites on the east side of Hyatt Reservoir will be open to the public mid-May through Labor Day weekend.

Suulutaaq, Inc., is a small general contractor and an Alaska Native Corporation subsidiary. They provide civil construction, restoration, and construction management services. Suulutaaq have experience constructing federal, state, municipal, and commercial projects.

Hyatt Dam was constructed in 1923 by the Talent Irrigation District (TID) for water storage. In 1960, Reclamation modified the dam, constructing fish screens and recreation facilities as a part of the Talent Division. Reclamation owns the dam, but it is operated by TID. Hyatt Dam is located on Keene Creek approximately 27 miles southeast of Talent, Oregon.
