For Release: May 31, 2005

Areas around Horsetooth Reservoir will be temporarily closed next week due to herbicide spraying. Recreators who frequent the trails around the dams should avoid those areas June 1 through June 4, 2005.

Spraying will begin on Wednesday, June 1 and conclude on Thursday, June 2. Hours of spraying will be between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. Visitors are advised to stay away from the trails and climbing areas adjacent to the dams during spraying and for 48 hours afterward. Due to increased security, the faces of the dams remain closed to all public access.

On Tuesday, May 31, signs warning of the spray program will be posted on trails near the affected areas.

There is a slight possibility weather might postpone the spraying. If there are heavy rains or very strong winds on the morning of June 1, spraying will be postponed until June 7 or June 8.

When the modernization on the four dams was completed in fall 2003, Reclamation revegetated the areas on and around Spring Canyon, Dixon Canyon, Soldier Canyon and Horsetooth dams. Now that the vegetation has had a year of growth, the areas will be sprayed with herbicides to promote the grasses and control invasive species like Canada thistle.

For additional information on the revegetation and spraying, please contact Kara Lamb with the Bureau of Reclamation at (970) 962-4326.
