For Release: May 21, 2005

On Friday, May 27, 2005, from 7 - 8:30 p.m., the Bureau of Reclamation invites you to join Bobby Beaver and Woodsy Owl for a children's safety program, Being Safe in the Woods and in the Water! The program will be held at the amphitheater in the Ironhorse Campground at the Glory Hole Recreation Area. Learn how to be safe in the campgrounds with fire, insects, reptiles, and animals, and while swimming, boating, and fishing at the lake. Children under the age of 15 may have a free Polaroid photo taken with our special guests.

On Saturday, May 28, 2005, from 10 - 11:30 a.m., children ages 4-15 can enjoy the art of Gyotaku - Japanese fish printing - by designing and printing their own T-shirt. The program will be held at the amphitheater and playground in the Ironhorse Campground at the Glory Hole Recreation Area. Turtles, fish, and other creatures look great in a whole array of colors when "stamped" on a T-shirt. Bring your own shirt or clothing article (or make a small donation for a shirt supplied by us) or just be creative with paper. Learn a bit about the fish that live in New Melones Lake. On Saturday, May 28, 2005, from 7 - 8 p.m., Nancy and Wray Haydock of the Stanislaus Wildlife Care Center will present "Enraptured with Raptors!" The program will be held at the amphitheater in the Ironhorse campground at the Glory Hole Recreation Area. As more cars and people move around our State, these magnificent birds fall prey to injury. Nancy and Wray will bring their collection of educational injured/non-releasable birds to see up close. A great horned owl, a red-tailed hawk, and other seldom-seen owls will be shown. Hear the stories of these animals and what you can do to help protect them. You will also learn what to do if you find an injured animal.

These programs are free and open to the general public. Free parking is available. Contact the New Melones Visitor Center at 209-536-9094, Extension 22, for directions or additional information
