For Release: May 20, 2005

The Visitor Center at Hungry Horse Dam in Montana will be opening on May 31 for the 2005 summer tourist season with a new exhibit that will take visitors on a virtual tour of the workings inside the dam, according to Facility Manager, Ralph Carter. Hungry Horse Dam is located off Highway 2 in Hungry Horse, Montana.

Hungry Horse Dam can be found by traveling east on Highway 2 through Columbia Falls to the town of Hungry Horse, where directional signs will lead them up hill for about 4 ½ miles to the Visitor Center.

Due to national security concerns, guided tours are only permitted on the top of the dam where special features are pointed out. But with the computerized virtual tour kiosk at the Visitor Center, the history and images of how the dam works will come alive.

The Bureau of Reclamation is placing the final touches on the exhibit which should be in place shortly after the official May 31 opening.

Meanwhile, guided tours will be available from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., seven days a week. The Visitor Center will tentatively close on August 27.

Parking is allowed only in designated areas and not on top of the dam roadway.

Admission to the Visitor Center and guided tour program is free.
