EMMETT, Idaho – The Bureau of Reclamation's Snake River Area Office will hold its annual C.A.S.T. for Kids fishing event Saturday, Aug. 20 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will be held at Black Canyon Park located on East Black Canyon Highway northeast of Emmett.

The C.A.S.T. "Catch a Special Thrill," program provides one day fishing and boating events designed to accommodate children with a wide range of special needs. This C.A.S.T. for Kids event is also part of First Lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move Outside" initiative. The First Lady's goal is to solve the problem of childhood obesity by encouraging healthy diets and more physical activity.

"The C.A.S.T. for Kids event has been held at Black Canyon Park for more than 20 years and each year, new memories are made that leave an impact on many involved," said Erika Lopez, event coordinator for the Bureau of Reclamation's Snake River Area Office. "I'm looking forward to seeing the families and volunteers at this amazing event."

Children participating are between 5-18 years old. Each participant receives fishing gear, a C.A.S.T. for Kids tee-shirt and hat. When the young anglers are done fishing, they will be treated with lunch provided by Gary Lillard with Farmers Insurance, and an awards ceremony. The Gem County Sheriff's Department and Gem County Fire District One will be on hand to provide emergency services if necessary.

Each child at the event will also receive an Otto Otter for Canal Safety coloring book. The book teaches children about the danger of canals and how to be safe around canals, ditches and other water sources.

Partners include: C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation, Bureau of Reclamation, and the Idaho Department of Fish and Game. Partner volunteers include members from the Idaho BASS Club, Intermountain Jet Boat Association, Payette River Bassmasters, Western Whitewater Association, and other local fishermen who provide fishing boats and professional expertise.
