Lake Berryessa's Pleasure Cove Resort Reopened

Media Contact: Jeffrey McCracken, 916-978-5100, JMCCRACKEN@mp.usbr.gov

For Release: May 20, 2004

The Bureau of Reclamation is pleased to announce the reopening of the Pleasure Cove Resort (Resort), located at Lake Berryessa, Calif. The Resort had been closed since April 15, 2004.

The Resort's concessionaire, Mr. Richard DeLooze, passed away on December 16, 2003, and the contract for the operation and maintenance of the Resort went to his Estate. Reclamation attempted to identify an executor for the Estate, but no legal representative stepped forward to take responsibility for the Resort; therefore, the Estate was in default on the Resort's Concession Agreement. The Concession Agreement terminated on April 14, 2004. Reclamation was unable to operate the Resort without a qualified operator, due in large part to potential liability and financial considerations.

On May 20, 2004, Reclamation and Mr. Steve Petty, PCR Asset Management Group LLC, signed an interim contract to provide recreational services at the Resort. Mr. Petty, under an agreement with the late Mr. DeLooze, had been the acting manager of the Resort since February 5, 2001. The interim contract between Reclamation and Mr. Petty will expire on December 31, 2005.
