News Conference Scheduled on Trinity River Peak Flows

Media Contact: Jeffrey McCracken, 916-978-5100, jmccracken@mp.usbr.gov

For Release: May 04, 2005

The Bureau of Reclamation will hold a news conference on Tuesday, May 10, 2005, featuring the first day of 7,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) releases into the Trinity River. A total of 647,000 acre-feet will be released from Trinity Reservoir into the Trinity River during the current water year which started October 1, 2004, and continues through September 30, 2005.

The news conference will be held at: Lewiston Dam and Fish Hatchery, 11 a.m. Approximately 4 miles north of Hwy 299 on Trinity Dam Blvd. Lewiston, CA

(Call Reclamation's Public Affairs office at 916-978-5100 for directions.)

Following the initial news conference there will be an opportunity to view other restoration activities in the nearby area, including recently completed bridges. This is also an opportunity for the news media to let the public know about the need for caution during this period of high, cold, and fast river flows.

Implementation of the recently approved 2005 Trinity River flow schedule began on April 22, 2005. Flows were ramped up from the winter base flow of 300 cfs, and will peak at 7,000 cfs on Tuesday, May 10. This year's peak of 7,000 cfs is the largest release for fishery restoration purposes since construction of Trinity and Lewiston Dams in 1963.

The increased water releases will flush significant accumulations of fine sediment, move and redeposit gravel, and scour riparian vegetation that has grown along the channel's edge. The flow schedule should also improve juvenile salmon and steelhead growth and survival in late spring and early summer. All of these actions will improve fishery habitat conditions throughout the river consistent with the Trinity River Restoration Program's (TRRP) objectives.

The flow release schedule is available online at www.usbr.gov/mp/cvo/vungvari/trinsch.pdf. To listen to a recording of the most current hourly dam releases, call 530-246-7594. Questions about the flow schedule can be directed to the TRRP office at 530-623-1800 during regular business hours. During the evenings and weekends, callers may listen to prerecorded Trinity River information by calling 800-742-9474 (select #2 and then #7).
