The Bureau of Reclamation is seeking public review and comment on a Draft Environmental Assessment for irrigation system improvements at the Tucker Road Pipeline Project, located in the Hood River watershed above Bonneville Dam in Oregon.

The main purpose of the EA is to evaluate potential environmental impacts associated with converting older leaking canals and pipelines belonging to Farmers Irrigation District into about 35,000 feet of pressurized pipeline. Water conserved by this project will be returned to the lower Hood River for improved stream flows during the irrigation season.

The district successfully competed for a $300,000 grant to accomplish this work through the U.S. Department of the Interior's "Water 2025: Preventing Crises and Conflict in the West" competitive challenge cost-share program. Reclamation Commissioner John Keys recognized the selection of the district in an award ceremony in October 2004.

The entire project consists of three construction phases, the final portion involving pipeline replacement of the FID's Water Conservation and Management Plan.

The Draft EA can be viewed on Reclamation's website at www.usbr.gov/pn/programs/pdfs/FIDDraftEA.pdf. This draft EA evaluates and discloses the potential benefits and impacts associated with this project as required by the National Environmental Policy Act.

The public comment period closes on May 11. Comments can be mailed to Bureau of Reclamation, LCA-6502, 1201 NE Lloyd Blvd. Suite 750, Portland OR 97232, or emailed to Tanya Sommer: tsommer@pn.usbr.gov.
