For Release: April 18, 2005

The first Yuma Water Festival will be conducted to commemorate the 35th Anniversary of Earth Day. This event will be held at the Yuma Crossing State Historic Park on April 21st, and 225 fourth grade students from Yuma District One schools will participate.

This event is one of many festivals sponsored by Project WET (Water Education for Teachers), an international water science and education program that promotes awareness, knowledge, and stewardship of our water resources. Project WET water festivals allow students to participate in interactive activities that expose them to water-theme science concepts of the hydrologic cycle, water use and conservation, surface water and groundwater resources, and watersheds.

These water festivals affect over 4,700 Arizona students each year throughout various locations in the state.

Event planning and staff support for this historic event is being accomplished through a partnership among the Bureau of Reclamation's Yuma Area Office, Project WET, the University of Arizona College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the Lower Colorado River Resource Conservation and Development Council, Yuma Crossing State Historic Park, and Yuma School District One.

The event is also being co-sponsored locally by the Yuma Area Ag Council, Yuma Heritage Area, and the Southwest States and Pacific Islands Land Grant Water Program.
