CARSON CITY, Nev. - The Bureau of Reclamation has released for public review a Draft Environmental Assessment on a project to control noxious weeds and restore native and desirable vegetation on 451 acres of the Middle Carson River floodplain near Dayton.

The project would be implemented by the Dayton Valley Conservation District using funds provided via a sub-grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation; the original grant funding source is Reclamation’s Desert Terminal Lakes Program. The Desert Terminal Lakes Program provides funding assistance to carry out conservation activities for terminal lakes and associated watersheds. The project would include mowing noxious weeds to allow herbicide application to control weeds, and seeding to establish native and desirable vegetation. Proposed treatment sites would also be inventoried and mapped for long-term habitat monitoring. These sites include privately-owned active and retired agricultural lands (359 acres) and Lyon County Open Space lands (92 acres). Public comments on the project will help identify any potential environmental issues and concerns that should be addressed in the Final EA.

The Draft EA was prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act and may be viewed at http://www.usbr.gov/mp/nepa/nepa_project_details.php?Project_ID=23109. If you encounter problems accessing the document online, please call 916-978-5100 (TTY 800-877-8339) or email mppublicaffairs@usbr.gov.

The Draft EA is also available for public review at the Dayton Valley Branch Library, 321 Old Dayton Valley Road, Dayton, NV 89403.

Written comments are due by close of business Friday, Oct. 30, 2015, to Selena Werdon, Bureau of Reclamation, 705 N. Plaza Street, Suite 320, Carson City, NV 89701. Comments may also be faxed to 775-884-8376 or emailed to swerdon@usbr.gov. For additional information, please contact Werdon at 775-884-8366.
