For Release: May 08, 2015

CARSON CITY, Nev. - The Bureau of Reclamation has released for public review a Draft Environmental Assessment evaluating the effects of the proposed Ash Canyon Acquisition Project in Carson City, Nev.

The proposal would allow federal grant funding to be used by the Nevada Land Trust to acquire a 45.5-acre parcel of private land and approximately 20 acre-feet of associated water rights from a willing seller in Ash Canyon. The acquisition funds would be provided via a sub-grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation; the original grant-funding source is Reclamation’s Desert Terminal Lakes Program.

The sub-grant funding would be used to complete acquisition of the property and transfer of fee title to an appropriate public entity such as the Nevada Division of State Parks or the Carson City Open Space Program, both of which are adjacent landholders. The funding would also allow the Nevada Land Trust to provide interim protection for a wet meadow on the property by relocating logs and boulders on site to block motorized access and prevent ongoing damage. Public comment on the project will help identify any potential environmental issues, concerns and alternatives that should be addressed in the Final EA.

The Draft EA was prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act and may be viewed at http://www.usbr.gov/mp/nepa/nepa_project_details.php?Project_ID=21541. If you encounter problems accessing the document online, please call 916-978-5100 (TTY 800-877-8339) or email mppublicaffairs@usbr.gov.

The Draft EA is also available for public review at the Carson City Library, 900 North Roop Street, Carson City, NV 89701.

Written comments are due Friday, May 22, 2015, to Selena Werdon, Bureau of Reclamation, 705 N. Plaza Street, Suite 320, Carson City, NV 89701. Comments may also be faxed to 775-882-7592 or emailed to swerdon@usbr.gov. For additional information, please contact Werdon at 775-884-8366.
