For Release: October 30, 2014

FRESNO, Calif. -- The Bureau of Reclamation has released environmental documents for public review that analyze a temporary reduction in water quality requirements for groundwater introduced into the Friant-Kern Canal. The proposal would temporarily allow introduction of water from specific, identified wells into the canal.

The temporary reduction would stretch limited water supplies available to Reclamation’s Friant Division water contractors.

Sampling of the water in the canal would be conducted weekly to ensure nitrate and salinity levels do not exceed certain limits. The proposed action would continue through Feb. 28, 2016 or as long as the drought continues.

The Draft Environmental Assessment and Finding of No Significant Impact were prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act and are available online at http://www.usbr.gov/mp/nepa/nepa_project_details.php?Project_ID=19781. If you encounter problems accessing the documents online, please call 916-978-5100 or e-mail ibr2mprpao@usbr.gov.
