Volunteers Invited to Join National Public Lands Day Activities at Shasta Lake as Part of Let’s Move Outside Initiative

SHASTA LAKE, Calif. – The Bureau of Reclamation’s Northern California Area Office, in partnership with the Shasta-Trinity National Recreation Area, will host a cleanup event at Shasta Lake’s Fisherman’s Point Day Use Area and the Shasta Dam area on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in celebration of National Public Lands Day.
The public is invited to participate. Work will include litter removal, planting native California plants, and minor maintenance at Fisherman's Point Day Use Area. Another group project will concentrate on shoreline clean-up on both sides of Shasta Dam. A barbecue lunch will be provided. Volunteers will receive a Shasta Lake National Public Lands Day t-shirt, a certificate of appreciation, and a “fee-free day” coupon good for one day free entrance to any federal public land.
On-site registration and check-in will begin at 8 a.m. at the Shasta Dam Visitor Center, 16349 Shasta Dam Blvd., Shasta Lake. Participants should dress for fall weather, bring a hat and sunscreen, and wear sturdy shoes.
In addition to public service activities, an educational booth will be set up at Shasta Dam. Activities will highlight the importance of disposing of trash responsibly and will provide participants with an opportunity to see firsthand that everyone has a significant part to play in creating a healthier environment.
Now in its 21st year, NPLD is the nation’s largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance public lands. More than 180,000 volunteers will participate at some 2,200 public lands across the nation to complete a projected $17 million in improvements. Again this year, the NPLD focus is on our national commitments to support public lands, spend time outdoors, and be more active. Research shows that one step to preventing childhood obesity, diabetes and depression is getting kids and their families to spend more time outside. NPLD encourages volunteers to explore and enjoy America's natural wonders through outdoor recreation. As part of this effort, Reclamation is involved in the national movement supporting the Department of the Interior’s Let’s Move Outside initiative.
