For Release: September 10, 2014

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Bureau of Reclamation has released for public review a draft Environmental Assessment analyzing the impacts of acquiring up to 3,450 acre-feet of groundwater from privately owned groundwater wells within the Grassland Resource Conservation District.

Due to the lack of available surface water supplies for wildlife areas this fall in a critically dry year, Reclamation proposes to acquire water from four existing groundwater production wells within the GRCD in Merced County, California, which can produce up to 3,450 acre-feet of groundwater in the current water year. The proposed action will develop a groundwater supply in the North Grasslands wildlife area that can be used to supplement refuge surface water supplies for critical fall and winter brooding habitat and spring nesting habitat for waterfowl.

The draft EA was prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act and is available online at http://www.usbr.gov/mp/nepa/nepa_project_details.php?Project_ID=19121. If you encounter problems accessing the document online, please call 916-978-5100 or email mppublicaffairs@usbr.gov.
