KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – The Bureau of Reclamation has announced its partnership with the City of Klamath Falls and the Klamath Trails Alliance to clean and repair the A Canal Recreation Trail. The Trail  serves as a commuting pathway that stretches through both urban and suburban areas of the community and also serves as a safe, alternative route to busy streets for pedestrians and bicyclists.

Repairs on the Trail by the partners will be on Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2014, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. During this time, the Trail will remain open to the public; however, some sections of the Trail may require users to detour around clean-up crews.

First constructed in 1978 as a community project by 13 local organizations, the Trail was designed to connect local recreation areas including three city parks, five school playgrounds, a community pool, the YMCA, and the Klamath County Fairgrounds.  The paved Trail runs adjacent to Reclamation’s Klamath Project A Canal and is 10 feet in width and roughly 4 miles in length.

“Ensuring that the Trail continues to provide a safe and scenic pathway through the community for school children, pedestrians, and bicyclists is a great example of how Reclamation can work with the local community to support and achieve mutual goals,” said Reclamation’s Klamath Basin Area Office Area Manager, Sheryl Franklin.

Reclamation and its partners will continue to coordinate to finalize a plan that includes repaving the entire Trail and developing an agreement to ensure long-term up-keep and maintenance for public use.
