NAPA, Calif. – In celebration of California Coastal Cleanup Day, the Bureau of Reclamation is partnering with the California Coastal Commission, Solano County Resource Conservation District, the Napa Resource Conservation District, and the Napa Dive Club to clean up Lake Berryessa’s Markley Cove and Pope Creek Bridge areas on Saturday, Sept. 20, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., and lunch will be served immediately following the cleanup.

In an effort to reduce the use of additional plastic at the cleanup sites, volunteers are encouraged to bring a bucket or reusable bag, work gloves, a reusable water bottle, and trash grabbers (if possible), but supplies will be available for all who need them. Participants should wear closed-toe shoes, a hat, and sunscreen and should be prepared to be outside in potentially changing weather.

To volunteer as part of the dive, canoe, and kayak crew, or the ground crew at Pope Creek Bridge, please contact Jason Jordan at 707-966-2111 ext. 143 or jgjordan@usbr.gov. To volunteer as part of the ground crew picking up trash at Markley Cove, please contact Marianne Butler at 707-301-5778 or Marianne.Butler@Solanorcd.org. Pre-registration is required for this event. Details about meeting locations and lunch at each site will be provided as individuals call in to pre-register.

Held every year on the third Saturday in September, California Coastal Cleanup Day is the state’s largest volunteer event. In 2013, over 51,543 volunteers removed 471,218 pounds of trash and 30,530 pounds of recyclables from California’s beaches, lakes, bays, creeks, rivers, and highways.
