Salt Lake City - The Bureau of Reclamation’s Upper Colorado Regional Office announced today that the public visitor center at Flaming Gorge Dam will remain closed through Thursday, April 29, 2004, to accommodate minor remodeling and equipment installation efforts. Workers employed at the dam site, recently began the process of laying new carpet in the visitor center, as well as installing some new video equipment that is used during public tours of the facility.

"In our efforts to touch up the public visitor center at Flaming Gorge Dam, it's become apparent that we will need to extend the closure for another week to accommodate carpet and equipment installation efforts," said Warren Blanchard, facility manager of Flaming Gorge Dam. "We've attempted to schedule these minor remodeling efforts to coincide with low visitation periods during the month of April."

In late May and/or early June, Reclamation will again close the visitor center for a brief period of days to accommodate the installation of new wall panel displays that will profile the construction of the dam, the area's history, nature and geography, as well as the recreational and outdoor opportunities that are available in the local area and/or around the reservoir.

The Flaming Gorge Visitors Center is jointly operated by the Bureau of Reclamation and the Forest Service and is open daily from 9:00 a.m., MST, to 5:00 p.m., MST. Prior to entering the visitor center and/or touring the Flaming Gorge Dam, visitors must pass through security screening. Bags, backpacks, and ladies purses are not allowed inside of the dam.
