Lower American River Flows Decreased for Maintenance and Installation of the Fish Weir Structure at Nimbus Fish Hatchery

California Data Exchange Center website GOLD RIVER, Calif. – The Bureau of Reclamation will temporarily decrease flows in the lower American River below Nimbus Dam on Wednesday, August 7, beginning at 2 a.m. Flow will decrease from 2500 cubic feet- per-second to 1000 cubic feet-per-second to perform maintenance on the weir structure prior to scheduled picket installation on Friday. Once maintenance is completed, flows will be increased again to 2500 cubic feet per second as early as 9 a.m. Folsom Dam, Folsom Reservoir and Nimbus Dam are located about 25 miles east of Sacramento, Calif., and are features of the Central Valley Project.

Please note that increasing the flows in the lower American River would cause a drop and subsequent rise of approximately 1 foot, 2 inches, as measured at the Fair Oaks U.S. Geological Survey station.

On Friday, Aug. 9, scheduled flows will be decreased to as low as 1,000 cfs to install the weir’s super structure. The weir super structure is installed annually to guide spawning Chinook salmon into the hatchery fish ladder.

Recreationists on or along the lower American River are advised to exercise caution due to cold river temperatures and variable flow conditions.
