SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Bureau of Reclamation has awarded a $3,969,451 contract for a channel rehabilitation project to enhance fish habitat along more than a mile of the Trinity River near Douglas City, Calif., as part of the Trinity River Restoration Program in Northern California.

“We are pleased to be taking another major step in restoration of the Trinity River as part of the long-term, comprehensive effort to restore fish and wildlife populations in and on the river below the Trinity and Lewiston dams," said Mid-Pacific Regional Director David Murillo.

The Lorenz Gulch channel rehabilitation project, awarded to T.L. Peterson Inc. of Red Bluff, Calif., is comprised of two sites about 22 miles downstream of Lewiston Dam. The project extends for about 1.2 miles along the river. The project is designed to increase salmon and steelhead habitat downstream of Lewiston Dam, as described in the 2000 Record of Decision for the Trinity River Mainstem Fishery Restoration, National Environmental Policy Act, compliance documents.

The overall TRRP also includes flow management, sediment control and watershed restoration. The results are monitored and assessed to incorporate experience into future restoration efforts through adaptive management.

The program differs from many other restoration programs in that it employs a riverine approach intended to create a dynamic river capable of building and maintaining sufficient habitat system-wide. For more information on the Trinity River Restoration Program, please visit www.trrp.net.
