Reclamation Releases Draft Environmental Document on Trinity River 2013 Channel Rehabilitation Efforts; Open House Scheduled

WEAVERVILLE, Calif. – As part of the Trinity River Restoration Program, the Bureau of Reclamation has released for public review the Draft Environmental Assessment/Initial Study on the Trinity River 2013 Channel Rehabilitation Sites: Douglas City and Lorenz Gulch. The proposed project is designed to enhance aquatic habitat quality and complexity through the construction of slow-water rearing habitat for juvenile salmon and steelhead, reconnection of the floodplain with the river, revegetation of native plants and placement of in-river wood structures to react with flow and create/maintain habitat.
Federal co-lead agencies, Reclamation and the Bureau of Land Management, and the California State lead agency, the North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board, are working together to inform the public about this proposed Trinity River restoration work. An open house to describe the proposed project and to receive public input will be held on:
Wednesday, March 20, 6:30-8:30 p.m., Douglas City School, 100 School Road, Douglas City, CA 96024
The open house will begin with a presentation at 6:40 p.m. after which Reclamation and BLM staff will answer questions at individual information stations about the different proposed sites.
The Douglas City site is located on the mainstem Trinity River in Douglas City surrounding the Highway 299 Bridge, and the Lorenz Gulch site is located approximately 2.5 miles downstream on Steiner Flat Road just past the Steiner Flat primitive campground. Together, these sites comprise the proposed project which the TRRP plans for construction in 2013/2014 to increase salmon and steelhead habitat downstream of Lewiston Dam, as described in the December 19, 2000, Record of Decision for the Trinity River Mainstem Fishery Restoration Environmental Impact Statement.
The Draft EA/IS was prepared in accordance with California Environmental Quality Act and National Environmental Policy Act requirements and is available at http://www.usbr.gov/mp/nepa/nepa_project_details.php?Project_ID=12570 or at the TRRP website at http://www.trrp.net/.
