REDDING, Calif. – The Bureau of Reclamation's Northern California Area Office, in partnership with the C.A.S.T. (Catch A Special Thrill) For Kids Foundation, will hold the 13th Annual C.A.S.T. For Kids event on Saturday, June 16, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Packers Bay Boat Marina on Shasta Lake, approximately 20 miles from Redding, Calif.

The C.A.S.T. For Kids fishing event teams up with community partners, volunteers and anglers with special needs children to enjoy a quality outdoor recreational experience through the sport of fishing. This year, Reclamation will host participants from Shasta County Social Services, California Children's Services, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Special Olympics, Eagle Soar and Northern California Burn Foundation.

The day begins with each child receiving a free fishing rod and reel, bait and tackle equipment, a T-shirt and a hat. While enjoying a healthy breakfast, the children will be visited by Smokey Bear from the U.S. Forest Service and mascot Chipper from the California Highway Patrol. They will also be given boating and water safety tips from the Shasta County Sheriff's Boat Patrol. The group will then head out to enjoy a morning of fishing on Shasta Lake. An awards ceremony will recognize their boat captains and the volunteers and the accomplishments of the children. A barbecue lunch hosted by the Elks Lodge and Shasta Lake Lions Club will conclude the event.

This C.A.S.T. event is part of the Departments of Interior's "Let's Move Outside" initiative http://www.letsmove.gov/lets-move-outside, which was created to get kids and families to take advantage of American's great outdoors, which abound in every city, town and community. Reclamation supports this effort as part of President Obama's "America's Great Outdoors"initiative http://americasgreatoutdoors.gov/, promoting the stewardship of our natural resources and reconnecting Americans – especially our young people – with the outdoors.
