For Release: December 15, 2011

Based on recent dam safety evaluations, the Bureau of Reclamation is initiating a Corrective Action Study to identify and develop alternatives to better enable Terminal Dam to endure possible damage from earthquakes. The dam is located in a seismically active area near the city of Fairfield, Calif.

The Corrective Action Study will identify the best alternatives to strengthen the dam. The study will include development of feasibility level designs, contain an economic analysis of alternatives and provide National Environmental Policy Act documentation.

Terminal Dam, built in 1959, is a feature of the Solano Project, a multipurpose project that supplies water for agricultural and municipal and industrial purposes. Terminal Dam and Reservoir are at the terminus of the Putah South Canal, which delivers water from Lake Berryessa. The dam is formed by two 25-foot high earth-filled embankments which impound a 100 acre-foot reservoir. Pumping plants located at the reservoir supply water to the cities of Benicia and Vallejo. The dam is owned by Reclamation and operated and maintained by the Solano Irrigation District under management of the Solano County Water Agency.
