For Release: October 25, 2011

The Bureau of Reclamation will host and participate in a series of security, emergency response, and tactical exercises associated with Glen Canyon Dam on October 25-27, 2011, in Page, Ariz., along with federal, state, and local emergency response agencies and law enforcement.

The training and exercises will focus on counter-terrorism based scenarios to provide involved agencies the opportunity to test and assess emergency response strategies and protocols, communication and coordination processes, and to clarify roles and responsibilities within an incident command management structure.

Participants involved in this exercise include the National Park Service, National Weather Service, Flagstaff Federal Bureau of Investigation, Arizona Department of Public Safety, Coconino County Sheriff's Office, Page Police and Fire departments, Flagstaff Police Department, and Colorado River Discovery.

Reclamation routinely conducts security exercises and evaluations at its facilities in accordance with Reclamation's security program in the interest of national security to ensure the safety of the public, facility employees, and to protect critical water and power infrastructure in the event of a threat. The knowledge and insight gained through these exercises are used by each participating agency to make improvements to their respective emergency response plans, as well as incorporated into plans for similar future exercises.
