For Release: October 18, 2011

The Bureau of Reclamation awarded nearly $3 million in grants through the CALFED Water Use Efficiency Grant Program during Fiscal Year 2011. With combined local cost-sharing contributions, more than $8.2 million in water management improvement projects will be implemented during the next 24 months.

It is estimated that more than 16,000 acre-feet per year (AFY) will be better managed or conserved as a result of the projects, contributing to the CALFED Program objectives of improving ecosystem health, water supply reliability and water quality.

Projects were selected through a competitive process and priority consideration was given to projects that addressed CALFED Program goals on a statewide basis. Reclamation awarded grants to seven projects in California, from Sutter County in northern California to Los Angeles County in southern California.

Grants during Fiscal Year 2011, from October 1, 2010 through September 30, 2011, include:

Inland Empire Utilities Agency, $406,700 - The Turner Basin Recharge Project will increase current basin capacity through more efficient capture and recharge of local rainfall runoff and recycled water that is currently not recoverable. The project is expected to conserve 520 AFY. The grant was awarded on September 22, 2011.

City of Los Angeles, $1 million - This commercial, industrial and institutional landscape incentive program is intended to provide financial incentives for the replacement of turf, irrigated with high water use irrigation systems, with drought tolerant plants with low flow irrigation systems. This project will conserve about 229 AFY. The grant was awarded on September 28, 2011.

Merced Irrigation District, $1 million - This project consists of canal lining and reconfiguration of the Arena Canal and Howard Lateral to reduce seepage and spillage within the system. The project will conserve 5,000 AFY. The contract was awarded on September 29, 2011.

Natomas Central Mutual Water Company (NCMWC), $154,000 - The Barnes Crossing Control Structure Automation Project includes construction of a weir to control water levels, as well as installation of electrically operated slide gates and local automated controls integrated into the NCMWC's monitoring and control system. The project should enable better management of 500 AFY. The contract was awarded on September 29, 2011.

Natomas Central Mutual Water Company, $23,700 - The 30's Pumping Plant: Flow Meter Installation and SCADA Expansion Project will provide accurate flow measurement of water supplied to the Northern Main and will improve water management at the 30's Pumping Plant. The project will conserve 480 AFY. The contract was awarded on September 28, 2011.

Pacheco Water District (PWD), $262,000 - The PWD will line about three miles of an existing earthen channel with a flexible, water-tight rubber liner. The project will eliminate seepage losses of 8,000 AFY. The grant was awarded on September 28, 2011.

City of Sacramento, $149,600 - The grant is for a residential audit and rebate program that will build on the city's metering program to provide interior and landscape audits and rebate opportunities to customers receiving a water meter for the first time. The project will enable conservation of 1,275 AFY. The grant was awarded on September 27, 2011.
