Reclamation Joins in the 21st Annual Return of the Salmon Festival

The Bureau of Reclamation's Northern California Area Office will participate in the 21st annual Return of the Salmon Festival. The festival will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, October 15, at the Coleman National Fish Hatchery near Anderson, Calif., about 20 miles southeast of Redding.

Reclamation's booth will highlight the benefits of Shasta Dam, water conservation, Coleman National Fish Hatchery and the Central Valley Project. Also, a board game designed to educate the public about Reclamation and its mission will be used to give participants an opportunity to answer questions, learn new facts and win a prize.

The annual event celebrates the return of fall-run Chinook salmon, and historically has drawn crowds larger than 10,000 people. Adults and kids alike will be able to view large numbers of fall-run Chinook salmon returning to Battle Creek and the hatchery. All aspects of day-to-day hatchery operations such as spawning, egg incubation and juvenile rearing, plus the salmon aquarium and natural resource information booths, will highlight the day's event.

Coleman National Fish Hatchery is the largest federal fish hatchery in the country, and was established to mitigate the loss of natural salmon and steelhead spawning areas in the upper reaches of the Sacramento, Pit and McCloud Rivers. Reclamation partially funds the hatchery in which a return of approximately 20,000 fish may occur this year.
