Media Contact: Pete Lucero, 916-978-5100, plucero@usbr.gov

For Release: September 08, 2011

The Bureau of Reclamation has signed a Finding of No Significant Impact for the Environmental Assessment on the impacts of Reclamation’s action to provide federal funding to The Nature Conservancy for construction of a spillway fish barrier for protection of native fish in Independence Lake.

Independence Lake is located in Sierra County, California. Reclamation’s Desert Terminal Lakes Program will provide funding for the fish barrier to The Nature Conservancy for the protection of the native fishery in the lake, as directed by congressional legislation. The fish barrier is intended to eliminate the upstream migration of non-native fish that pose a risk to the lake’s unique population of federally listed Lahontan cutthroat trout. The Final Environmental Assessment (EA) and Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) were prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act. To request a copy of the Final EA and FONSI or for more information on the project, please contact Caryn Huntt DeCarlo, Lahontan Basin Area Office, at 775-884-8352 or e-mail chunttdecarlo@usbr.gov.
