The Bureau of Reclamation awarded a $680,399 contract to refurbish 11 stoplogs at the John W. Keys III, Pump-Generating Plant which is located at Grand Coulee Dam on the Columbia River about 90 miles east of Spokane, Wash.

Fabrications Products Inc., Vancouver, Wash., was awarded the contract on August 25, 2011. Work involves removing the original steel stoplogs that were installed in 1946 which are about 17 feet wide and 10 feet tall, each weighing up to 25,500 pounds.

This refurbishment also includes installing a redesigned seal system to replace the original wood seal system. Stoplogs are used to close off water to accommodate maintenance at the individual pump-generating units.

The project is being funded by the three Columbia Basin irrigation districts, Bonneville Power Administration, and Reclamation appropriated funding.

Work is expected to start around Sept. 1 and completed by mid-December 2011.

The pump-generating plant pumps water 280 feet uphill from Franklin D. Roosevelt Lake into Banks Lake. This water is used to irrigate approximately 670,000 acres of farmland in the Columbia Basin Project. More than 60 varieties crops are grown in the basin and distributed across the nation.

In 2008, the plant was renamed in honor of the late John W. Keys III, who served as Reclamation Commissioner from 2001-2006; and Pacific Northwest Regional Director from 1986 to 1998.
